Who says you have to lose your cool when enjoying the outdoors on hot summer days? Not us! We've handpicked the best running, walking and hot-weather gear and accessories so you can get moving and savor the sun in style.

What you wear for outdoor summer workouts or walks on the beach can be the differences between fun in the sun and having a meltdown. Nobody likes being hot, sweaty and lethargic, but now you can beat the heat by adding a few essentials to your outdoor gear.

Bottoming out

Reebok Women’s 2-in-1 Running Shorts, which have an inner compression-fit short, also include Speedwick technology, which wicks sweat away from the body to help you stay cool and dry, and perforations strategically placed for maximum ventilation and breathability.

If you prefer something a little longer, look no further than L.L.Bean’s Vista Trekking Shorts. These shorts have a 9” inseam, come in four colors up to size 20, and offer two-way stretch for great ease of movement. They’ll also keep your legs from burning with their UPF 40+ sun protection, and will keep you cool with their moisture-wicking, quick-drying fabric.

The upper half

Now that you’ve got the bottom covered, here are our top half faves to keep you cool in the heat.

The Athleta Sunlover UPF Tank is is a double-whammy, with both function and style. It comes in 12 colors and is super lightweight. It also boasts UPF 50+ protection, and breathable, wicking fabric that pulls sweat away from the body so it can evaporate faster.
Prefer sleeves? We’ve got you. The Arctic Cool Women’s V-Neck shirt with cooling mesh sides is available in four different colors up to size 3XL. It features HydroFreeze X Technology, “a cooling management system that reduces the fabric temperature during activity” and that "dramatically chills your body temperature as you sweat.”

Guess what else is good for hot weather exercise? The Būband! The Būband provides the support you need to prevent painful breast bounce, which means you can wear your most lightweight, breathable sports bra or tank with built-in bra while you move. No need for a hot, heavy, restrictive sports bra. Plus, the Būband can be taken off quickly and easily so you can go about your day in the comfy bra you actually want to wear.

Don't forget your underwear

Your base layer is just as important your outter-most layer, but easy to forget. Patagonia’s Women’s Active Briefs are made with lightweight, stretchy moisture-wicking fabric, breathable crotch construction, and have a seamless waistband that lies flat and won’t roll or bind.

Too hot to trot?

This nifty cooling towel has been a lifesaver on hot days on the track for Būband Ambassador Debbie King (picture below). The Koldtec ice towel stays cold for up to 3 hours, has a flexible cooling pack inside and a wicking bamboo sleeve. Plus, it’ll stay put while you wear it while you walk, hike, ride your bike or (in Debbie's case) run really fast!

Don't be a hothead

Keep the sweat and sun out of your eyes with the HeadSweat performance visors, which will help keep your head cool and dry while allowing the extra heat to escape out the top.

Water, water everywhere

The SpeedDraw Plus Insulated Flask from Nathan comes in five fun colors and is insulated, so it keeps your water cool on hot days. It also has a hand strap, which makes it easy to carry, along with a large expandable, zippered pocket to carry your phone, keys and ID.

Look cool, stay cool

Nike's line of running sunglasses offers a host of choices, but we like these modern-looking Nike Bandit, which come in seven colors and sport several stay-cool features. Rubber channels in temple arms increase airflow and grip, anti-fog ventilation holes in the frame circulate air, a floating nose pad helps optimize airflow and absorb impact, and ventilated temple arms prevent fogging and moisture accumulation. Plus, they look great.

Finishing touches

We’re seriously addicted to Blistex, many of which have 15 SPF for regular use. But if you need something more protective when you’re going for a hot-weather hike or hitting the beach, try its Five Star Lip Protection, which has broad spectrum 30 SPF, plus wheat germ oil, which provides moisture relief for heat-stressed lips.

If you have long hair that you like to keep off your face and neck on a hot day, the Scunci Everyday and Active hair ties may just become your new best friend. These jelly ties won’t budge once they’re in place and don’t require readjusting or tightening.
