6 Benefits to Workouts With a Buddy | Būband

Whether you're already meeting your fitness goals or you could use a boost, finding a workout friend may be the answer to improving your game and reaching your goals sooner.

A fitness buddy is a workout partner who agrees to support you in achieving your goals while you agree to support their pursuit of better health as well. A fitness buddy may exercise with you or be a long-distance, virtual partner.

6 Reasons to Have A Fitness Partner

1. You're more likely to show up for a workout if someone is waiting for you

Being accountable to your partner can motivate you to show up for your workout. According to Thomas Plante, PhD, professor of psychology at Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California:

"If you know a friend is waiting for you at the gym or won't pound the pavement without you, it's tough to bail."

2. Someone is watching your form
You may think you're giving 110% to your workout, but when your partner is watching, you tend to work out harder and pay more attention to form, get better results and are less likely to get injured.

3. Safety
No one likes to think about it, but the unexpected happens. A long-distance 5 a.m. bike ride with a partner is safer than going it alone.

4. Healthier eating habits
You may have chosen a workout buddy to motivate you to actually show up to your fitness class, but that same person is seeing you week after week in your gym gear. If your partner knows you've also committed to more nutritious eating habits, you tend to eat better to show off your results.

5. Reduced stress
Exercising on a stationary bike for 30 minutes with a friend will make you feel calmer after the workout than cycling alone, according to a study in the International Journal of Stress Management

6. You'll work out harder
Working out with a partner you think is better than you can make you work up to 200% harder and longer, say researchers at Kansas State University

There are proven benefits to working out with a partner, ranging from safety to improved performance. Ask a friend to become your workout buddy, or recruit a partner with similar fitness goals. #bBetterTogether
